Description

Maca Root ~ Lepidium Meyenii

Organics NZ Maca root (lepidium meyenii) is a cruciferous vegetable and therefore related to the broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and kale family.

Grown in the Andes Mountains – high altitude, Maca originates from Peru in South America. The local tribes call it ‘Peruvian Ginseng’ due to its fertility and sexual hormone success and have used it for thousands of years.

Maca is a pleasant tasting root, and comes in a variety of colours – with yellow, black and red most common. (all colours having similar benefits) It is ground down and available in powder and vegetable capsules.

  • Considered an adaptogen, a name given to certain herbs, plants, and natural substances that help the body naturally adapt to stressor’s like a busy schedule, demanding job, illness or even demands of exercise and sport.
  • Helps to restore endocrine (hormonal), sexual, and mental health hormone imbalances, despite it containing no hormones itself.
  • Rich in nutrients, having a higher calcium level than milk and is very nutrient dense.

Benefits

Top Super functions:

PMS, Menopause,  Women with Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) Maca is believed to help by controlling estrogen levels in the body.

Women’s hormones, Fertility and Sexual Health – Maca aides in restoring women’s hormonal balance by supporting the endocrine system. It aides in regulating a healthy adrenal and thyroid hormone production, which play a major part in our feelings, from stress levels to appetite. By boosting the menopausal women’s moods, and decreasing the levels of anxiety and depression, this can lead to increased sexual libido and endurance, due to the positive effects of serotonin levels. (the ‘feel good’ hormone) It alleviates menstrual issues and menopause, cramps, hot flushes and mood swings.

Males Testosterone levels and fertility – in clinical studies, positive effects on sperm production, mobility and volume were shown, thereby enhancing fertility in men.

Energy, Memory and Mood – taken regularly, Organic Maca Powder, generates feelings of being more awake, energised and driven and compared to caffeine, Maca does not leave you with feelings of jitters or shakiness. Maintaining positive energy levels relates to lower levels of anxiety and depression.

Organic Maca Root is rich in vitamins B1, B2, C, and E and provides additional calcium, protein, zinc, iron, potassium, copper, magnesium, phosphorous and amino acids. (see list below)

  • Vitamins B-1 or thiamin, helps your body convert food into energy.  B-2 – is involved in energy metabolism. C – helps the body form and maintain connective tissue, including bones, blood vessels, and skin. and E – is key for strong immunity and healthy skin and eyes.
  • Calcium – build and maintain strong bones and teeth
  • Magnesium – crucial to nerve transmission, muscle contraction, blood coagulation, energy production, nutrient metabolism and bone and cell formation.
  • Potassium – maintain a normal blood pressure
  • Copper – helps with the formation of collagen, increases the absorption of iron and plays a role in energy production.
  • Zinc – needed for the body’s defensive (immune) system to properly work. It plays a role in cell division, cell growth, wound healing, and the breakdown of carbohydrates. Zinc is also needed for the senses of smell and taste.
  • Phosphorus – a vital part of the growth process and together with Calcium creates strong bones and teeth.
  • Iron – helps metabolise proteins and plays a role in the production of heemoglobin and red blood cells.
